WHAT IS HAND FINISHED FRAMING?

Hand finished frames give a unique character to a print as an almost infinite combination of profiles, finishes and colours are possible.

Standard framing involves cutting and joining pre-finished mouldings to make the frame.

Hand finished framing requires a skilled craftsman who will first select a suitable frame profile which is cut and joined to make a bare wood frame.  The frame is then finished using a combination of traditional and contemporary techniques and materials.  Depending on the finish chosen a frame may take many days to complete as component layers are built up to achieve the desired result.

The result is a completely bespoke frame made to uniquely complement the original painting.  To this end, no two hand finished frames are ever exactly the same.

For 'Over the Line' we have chosen a painted black finish which is slightly distressed allowing the red/brown undercoat to show through the black on the frame edges. Then a gold slip is added in between the frame and the print to lift the image further resulting in a frame which perfectly compliments the print whether hung in a traditional or contemporary setting.

WHAT IS ARTGLASS?
Standard picture framing glass is called float glass. This glass is used by the majority of picture framers and is perfectly acceptable for use when framing most limited edition prints but it does cause reflection and impurities in the glass cause the framed image to appear duller than intended.

For Tabitha's prints we feel this reflection not only dulls the images, but hides the brush stoke detail that is a major part of Tabitha's work. We therefore fit all Tabitha's prints with a speciality glass called ARTglass designed to reduce reflection and improve clarity.
Unlike 'non-reflective' glass which is etched to reduce reflection but has a cloudy appearance as a result, ARTglass is coated with a high-tech film, reducing reflection whilst adding clarity.
The example shown here is an actual scan of a print framed with ARTglass in the left half of the frame and standard glass in the right half. This image has not been altered or enhanced in any way and clearly shows how ARTglass improves the clarity and vibrancy of the print. From certain viewing angles it appears that the glass is invisible.

Biography

Tabitha Salmon is a widely-acclaimed artist working in the figurative tradition whose paintings are remarkable for their colour, energy and impact. Private collectors and public and commercial institutions consider her to be one of the outstanding British artists of her generation.

Tabitha was born in 1955 in Kent, studied at Brighton and Camberwell Colleges of Art, and has been a professional painter for thirty years. During this time she has become much-travelled, an artist who responds with characteristic enthusiasm to new places and cultures. She is always drawing, and develops her images using multi-disciplinary media - oils, watercolours, gouache, oil pastel and gold leaf.

Wherever she has been travelling, the sketches and studies made on the spot are brought home to her London studio. There Tabitha can contemplate the material with total freedom and make it her own: “Putting all that distance between you and a place,” she says “...it does become like a dream, a sort of vision”.

All of this rich artistic experience has provided Tabitha with a catalogue of themes and a formidable body of work which she now draws on for more personal and iconic images. She says she is happiest when she can “revisit places in my mind’s eye... that’s what I find very liberating...”.
