Meet the Artist - Fred Gordon

With the recent addition of several stunning new pieces by Fred Gordon to our portfolio of bronze sculpture, we thought we would give you a closer look at this talented artist, his inspirations and his creative and casting process.

Fred is an award winning sculptor, who, following a foundation diploma in Art and Design at Falmouth University, graduated from the University of Edinburgh in July 2017 with a 2:1 MA(Hons) in French and History of Art.

Before finally turning to sculpture, in 2011, to better capture the intricacies of the anatomy and the movement inherent in the wildlife he observed, he had first used drawing as a way of capturing the essence of his subjects. A move art collectors will be forever thankful for, striking and highly sought after as his sculpture now is!

Centering around birds and animals - from toads to tapir - his passion for wildlife is clear to see in his spontaneous, textured and contemporary sculpture.

Fred was exposed to and inspired by the natural world from an early age, and has lived in the countryside all his life.

He has been fortunate to have travelled around the world observing and sculpting wildlife in their natural habitat. Last year he was invited to spend a three month artist residency on a private reserve in the Bushveld in Limpopo, South Africa. There he created five wildlife studies, which were transported home in a portable studio case to be cast in Bronze back in the foundry in the UK.

Working first in heated sheets of wax, Fred uses quick and fluid gestures to capture the motion and vitality of the subject, and later applies more intricate detail once the wax has cooled.

This 'wax master' is then cast in bronze at the foundry by way of a process known as the 'Lost Wax Technique'.

Fascinated as he is by this complex process, Fred has adopted a hands-on approach and works part time at the local foundry at which some of his pieces are moulded and cast.

Constantly creating and growing his collection, he is currently working on a large scale outdoor piece - which we can't wait to see.
