WHAT IS HAND FINISHED FRAMING?
Hand finished frames give a unique character to an original painting as an almost infinite combination of profiles, finishes and colours are possible.
Standard framing involves cutting and joining pre-finished mouldings to make the frame.
Hand finished framing requires a skilled craftsman who will first select a suitable frame profile which is cut and joined to make a bare wood frame. The frame is then finished using a combination of traditional and contemporary techniques and materials. Depending on the finish chosen a frame may take many days to complete as component layers are built up to achieve the desired result.
The result is a completely bespoke frame made to uniquely complement the original painting. To this end, no two hand finished frames are ever exactly the same.
WHAT IS ARTGLASS?
Standard picture framing glass is called float glass. This glass is used by the majority of picture framers and is perfectly acceptable for use when framing most limited edition prints but it does cause reflection and impurities in the glass cause the framed image to appear duller than intended.
To overcome these compromises we offer all our limited editions with the option of been fitted with a speciality glass called ARTglass designed to reduce reflection and improve clarity.
Unlike 'non-reflective' glass which is etched to reduce reflection but has a cloudy appearance as a result, ARTglass is coated with a high-tech film, reducing reflection whilst adding clarity.
The example shown here is an actual scan of a print framed with ARTglass in the left half of the frame and standard glass in the right half. This image has not been altered or enhanced in any way and clearly shows how ARTglass improves the clarity and vibrancy of the print. From certain viewing angles it appears that the glass is invisible.
Biography
Biography
Her remarkably naturalistic portraits of animal subjects are depicted on a clean white background, which not only creates a dramatic graphic image, but conveys her modern aesthetic. Each image has an almost snap-shot quality, showing her unique ability of capturing the personality of each animal and imparting humour, character and whimsy to many of her pieces. " I have always seen the human side in animals - the way they make you laugh or sympathise with them with an action or an expression. I paint mainly from my own photos but can sometimes spend hours watching the subject as it's all about capturing that single moment."
Dominique frequently travels to Kenya where she is lucky enough to spend hours studying her subjects. On a recent trip, having noticed how the elephants vary in shades of red from rolling and spraying themselves in the rich soil out there, she came up with the idea of using the actual earth as a pigment in her paintings to convey this.
Dominique has quickly become an acclaimed wildlife artist and consequently her paintings are now highly sought after by private collectors and art dealers worldwide. She frequently exhibits in both London and New York, has been shortlisted for the David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year, several years in a row and is winner of the BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year 2009, World Mammals category. In 2013, her ostrich painting “Rubbernecking” was chosen to for the international Birds in Art exhibition at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wisconsin.
